Conclusion
Due to great differences between cultures and religions East Timor population was subject to sexual harassment, sexual torture, sexual slavery, torture, public executions, and famine. By the end of the genocide over two thirds of the women had been raped or put in sexual slavery. By the end of the genocide East Timor's pre-genocide population of about 600,000 had gone down to about 400,000 people. It was not only Indonesia's fault but of the United States and of other countries. This was the height of the Cold War and East Timor a socialist country was believed to be a threat. America had to support Indonesia to prevent them from switching to the Comintern. Not until the Santa Cruz Massacre in the capital of Dili where 300 teenagers, young adults and children were killed did opinions change. Rights and Responsibilities of countries were abandoned due to a common enemy: communism. East Timor was the sacrificial lamb, nations could abandon their rights and responsibilities toward the East Timor population and band themselves against the Communist bloc. In 2002 East Timor became independent from Indonesia. It was officially named Timor-Leste. The East Timor Genocide is a reminder that rights and responsibilities of all the different ethnic groups in this world must be respected and must not be ignored due to bigger issues in this world and to appease one nation.
